YEREVAN. – Building trade relations with the European Union is more beneficial for Armenia than doing it within the framework of the new Eurasian Union, Armenian expert said.
Economist Gagik Makaryan, Executive Director of the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen of Armenia, believes Armenia should be able to choose from the available options. The decision will depend on the choice between the agreement on free trade area and joining the Eurasian Union.
“We need to be ready to choose from the available opportunities. We need to develop a strategy that will allow businesses to better navigate,” he said.
However, he added, we must not forget that a number of goods produced by Armenia could not compete in the EU market and can be sold only within the CIS.
“On the other hand, the agreement with the EU, among others, can help to open the border with Turkey, as the closed borders contradict the interests of international trade and the EU principles,” Makaryan concluded.
