YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan considers unfair the provisions of present legislation concerning life imprisonment.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Karen Andreasyan reminded of the need to raise the age limit from 18 to 21 years – the legislative initiative which was introduced in 2012.

“However, this is not a topic where politicians can show off,” he said, adding that he will turn to the issues this fall.

According to Karen Andreasyan, the question is not only to raise the age limit, but the need to give confidence and enable a person to improve, to provide an opportunity to review the case.

“In some cases, the application of punishment is more horrible than the crime itself. Among those sentenced to life imprisonment there are people who killed a man by accident, and their sentence was handed down in Soviet times,” Ombudsman said.
