YEREVAN. – President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan did not make a hasty decision by announcing about the intention to become a member in the Customs Union.
National Assembly (NA) Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan stated the afore-said during a press conference on Thursday.
“I did not sense that there is any pressure on our authorities, and no one has forced us to join the Customs Union. The President of Armenia has also said this,” Abrahamyan noted.
In his words, another process starts after announcing about the intention to become a Customs Union member, and the governments of Armenia and Russia will carry out joint activities during this process. And once the respective agreement is prepared, it will be introduced to the NA.
“Armenia is an independent state, which independently selects its foreign policy. Becoming a member in the Customs Union should be beneficial for Armenia. I personally favor membership in the Customs Union, since the interest of the country dictates this,” Hovik Abrahamyan stressed, in particular.
In his words, if the prepared document will not be in Armenia’s best interests, it will not be signed. At present, the matter refers solely to an initial agreement.
To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union.
