YEREVAN. – Opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) bloc National Assembly Faction Secretary Aram Manukyan does not wish to assess Armenia’s plans to enter the Customs Union, since he has no information as to what it is.   

Manukyan himself stated the aforesaid during a press conference on Friday.

“No one knows what it is that they are trying to join. [President] Serzh Sargsyan made individual decisions without discussing with his [political] team. I see adventurism here. There was an avenue for going to both the European and the Russian market. [But], with regard to security matters, it is risky to say severe things,” Manukyan said.       

The ANC MP also noted that Armenia has lost is reputation as a serious partner.

“Serzh Sargsyan is trying to deceive a powerful country such as Russia, [and] the European Union,” he said, and added that Russia is not even convinced that Sargsyan is sincere in his announcement.

He also expressed his astonishment that Armenia held secret negotiations with the Europeans for four years, but it conducted the same negotiations with Russia, too.

“This is a politological, a diplomatic scandal,” Aram Manukyan stated. 

To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union.
