YEREVAN. – Canadian MP Stéphane Dion said the main goal of his visit to Nagorno-Karabakh was to get familiarized himself with the situation over Syrian Armenians as Canada plans to render assistance to refugees.

“I am not authorized to speak on behalf of the Canadian government, but the consequences of Syrian crisis are terrible. In this regard, I held meeting with refugees from Syria and Armenian Diaspora Minister,” he told reporters on Thursday.

As to Canada’s position on the Syrian issue, the parliamentarian noted that his country is for peace in the region is concerned over use of chemical weapons. Canada welcomes the solution that Russia and US are working at, he emphasized.

“Canada is certainly encouraging talks for finding solution, but we have a lot of mistrust about the many of these groups that are fighting the regime that is awful for its own population. But it does not mean that opposition as such may be something that we are confident about,” he said.

Stéphane Dion spent almost a week in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. He held meetings with the Karabakh officials, Armenian Diaspora Minister, MPs, and the head of Armenia-Canada parliamentary friendship group.
