YEREVAN. – Even though Gevorg Kostanyan is more acceptable than former Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan in all aspects and qualities, in this environment he cannot manifest himself as the guardian of the law.

Opposition Armenian National Congress Party Vice-Chairman and Armenian National Congress bloc National Assembly (ANC NA) Faction leader Levon Zurabyan noted the aforesaid following his talk with Military Prosecutor Gevorg Kostanyan, who is nominated as the new Prosecutor General of Armenia.    

Zurabyan stressed that time should be given to Kostanyan to be able to address the issues that were raised. He added that the ANC raised several issues before the attorney general nominee, and the latter noted that he still needs to examine these matters.       

Incidentally, Levon Zurabyan said the ANC NA Faction has not yet discussed Kostanyan’s nomination, and it is not yet clear as to how they will vote on this matter. 

To note, President Serzh Sargsyan on Thursday nominated Gevorg Kostanyan’s candidacy as the new Prosecutor General of Armenia. On Friday, Kostanyan is holding respective talks with the NA factions. Pursuant to Armenia’s law, the National Assembly appoints, with the President’s proposal, the Prosecutor General of the country for a six-year term. But the same person cannot be appointed Prosecutor General for more than two consecutive terms.
