YEREVAN. – Even though the candidacy of the candidate for the office of the Prosecutor General is acceptable for virtually all MPs, several deputies may vote against Gevorg Kostanyan’s respective candidacy.   

Ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction leader Galust Sahakyan told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am. He commented on the nomination of Kostanyan, who on Monday met—at the NA—with the RPA MPs.

“I am familiar with the results of the talks between Kostanyan and the representatives of all parliamentary factions. Virtually all MPs are disposed positively toward his candidacy. But due to political ideas, some [of the MPs] may vote against Kostanyan,” Sahakyan said. 

He added that  the NA voting on the next attorney general will be held on Tuesday. 

To note, on September 26, President Serzh Sargsyan nominated Military Prosecutor Gevorg Kostanyan’s candidacy as the new Prosecutor General of Armenia. Pursuant to Armenia’s law, the National Assembly appoints, with the President’s proposal, the Prosecutor General of the country for a six-year term. But the same person cannot be appointed Prosecutor General for more than two consecutive terms.
