YEREVAN. – Within the framework of his constitutional powers and on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the country, the President of Armenia has proposed the parliament to declare amnesty.

National Assembly (NA) Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan stated the abovementioned Wednesday in the parliament.

In his words, amnesty bears a humanitarian, social, legal and juridical nature in every civilized country, and contributes to the strengthening and improvement of the ethical and psychological environment in a country.

“I highly appreciate the proposal by the President of Armenia. We welcome this step whereby the state shows humanity. Amnesty stems from our Christian faith and system of values.

“In numerous countries amnesty is considered a political move. In our country, amnesty is aimed at solving problems; but the most important from them is the consolidation of civil solidarity,” the NA speaker said, in particular.

Hovik Abrahamyan also called upon those who will be set free as a result of this amnesty to be law-abiding, from now on, and justify the trust that the state has put in them.
