YEREVAN. – Azerbaijan has developed a new tactic. If previously it solely was testing the firmness of an Armenian military position, today it carries out absolute encroachments upon the borders of Armenia, political analyst Styopa Safaryan said at a press conference on Monday.

In his words, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev wants to aggravate the situation to the point that the superpowers do not neglect the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, and that they resolve it in Azerbaijan’s favor.

“The current tension on the border also depends on Armenia’s [recent] accession to the EEU [i.e., the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union]. Ilham Aliyev attempts to escalate the [Karabakh] conflict, [and] test Armenia’s durability within the EEU; [but] the [respective] conclusions here are not in our [, Armenia’s,] favor. Aliyev has but one desire: to find out the extent this union stands up for its ally,” Safaryan said.

The analyst also expressed a conviction that if the international community does not give the appropriate reaction to the ongoing ceasefire violations, these countries likewise will face danger.

“Let no one cherish serious hopes that the [Karabakh] issue will be resolved pacifically in 2015,” Styopa Safaryan added.

Azerbaijan has intensively violated the ceasefire during the New Year holidays, and as a result, both sides have suffered casualties.
