One of the key events on the occasion of the Armenian Genocide Centenary is the Armenian Genocide Centenary National Commemoration Evening that will be held at the Sydney Town Hall on April 24, ANC Australia Executive Director Vache Kahramanian told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The keynote speaker at the event is human rights barrister, author of the books about Armenian Genocide Geoffrey Robertson QC. The event will be attended by 2-3 thousand guests, among them politicians and diplomats.

In addition, Armenians of Australia will organize numerous events, including screening of movies and cultural events, that will be held throughout the year.

Executive Director said ANC Australia is working on a publication that will collect all articles about the Armenian Genocide that have ever been published by the Australian media outlets.

“There are around 23,000 articles, and we hope the book will appear till April 24,” he added.

As regards Turkey's initiative to mark the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli events on April 24, ANC Australia representative believes it is continuation of the denial policy. He is confident that many in Australia are well aware of it.

“But, unfortunately, Turkey uses the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli events as pressure on the Australian government,” Mr. Kahramanian added.

He emphasized that Turkey always uses threats as it was in case with the motion adopted by the New South Wales parliament.

Nevertheless, ANC Australia Executive Director hopes the situation may change.

“I think there will be some changes in Australia's political field when the Gallipoli events are over, and the government and parliament will make some moves towards the acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide. The pressure in connection with Gallipoli anniversary will be reduced, and some changes may occur,” Mr. Kahramanian resumed.
