YEREVAN. – The Republic of Armenia National Assembly (RA NA) should adopt a declaration and assess the ongoing atrocities committed against the Yezidis in northern Iraq.
The chairperson of the opposition Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), Naira Zohrabyan, who also heads the PAP NA Faction, stated the aforementioned at the parliament on Tuesday.
“The matter needs to be discussed in detail, but the parliamentary forces need to make a joint assessment, at least by no later than April 24 [i.e. the Armenian Genocide Centennial], especially considering that the RA authorities support the UN Security Council’s position on this issue,” Zohrabyan stated. “This is our moral duty to our Yezidi brothers.”
In response, NA President Galust Sahakyan noted that everyone is in favor of this position, and the Armenian parliament already had held several respective events.
“I’ll try to organize a meeting of the political forces,” Sahakyan said. “Let’s see what we can proclaim.”
