YEREVAN. – An electricity price increase in Armenia will impact the supplier and the consumer, alike, sociologist Aharon Adibekyan said at a press conference on Monday.

“First and foremost, the supplier puts itself into a dead end, since as a result of the [price] hike in electricity, the number of [electricity] consumers will reduce,” Adibekyan noted. “On the other hand, it will impact the consumers, especially the families receiving [social] benefits.”

The sociologist expressed a conviction that even though an electricity price increase is inevitable in Armenia, this should be carried out by way of “soft measures,” and the state, for its part, should reimburse the socially disadvantaged class of the society. 

To note, the Electric Networks of Armenia company has petitioned to the Public Services Regulatory Commission, with a request for an electricity price hike in Armenia. If this request is granted, it will be followed by an increase in the prices of first necessity goods in the country.
