YEREVAN. – It is inappropriate to include in the German Bundestag (parliament) resolution the thesis about a need for studying the historical facts about the Armenian Genocide, since the text of this resolution states that the extermination of the Armenian nation is a fact.

Historian and German Studies specialist Ashot Hayruni noted the aforesaid at a press conference on Monday.

He said that even though this draft resolution does not note the setting up of an Armenian-Turkish commission, it does point to a need to study the respective historical events and accept the facts, and that it is solely after this that there will be a true Armenian-Turkish reconciliation.

In Hayruni’s words, despite pressure from the Turkish side, Armenia shall not sit idle and wait for which resolution the Bundestag will ultimately pass. 

On April 24, the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the 101st session of the German Bundestag kicked off with debates on an Armenian Genocide resolution. The term “genocide” is used only in passing and it is not on the title of the respective resolution submitted by Germany’s ruling coalition. On the other hand, genocide recognition and condemnation is in the forefront of the resolution submitted by the Bundestag minority.
