YEREVAN. – It is necessary to develop mechanisms, according to which Armenia’s residents and businesses would have guarantees against the raising of the price of electricity in the country within certain deadlines.

Secretary of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun Party National Assembly (NA) Faction, Aghvan Vardanyan, told the aforementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“They [i.e. the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC)] knew and were silent, [and] didn’t take action about the bad financial condition at the ENA [i.e. the Electric Networks of Armenia Company],” said Vardanyan.

The ARF MP has but one concern: Will the people of Armenia continue to remain hostage of the ENA? Or will they be able to eliminate this monopoly?

Parliamentary hearings on the matter of raising the price of electricity are still in progress.

The PSRC on Tuesday introduced a draft decision, according to which the price of electricity in Armenia will increase by 6.93 drams—instead of 17 drams, proposed by the ENA—per cubic meter, as of August 1. If this decision is approved, however, it is expected to be followed by an increase in the prices of numerous other goods in Armenia.
