Attorney Manuela Carmena was elected Mayor of Madrid after the voting at the City Council of the Spanish capital city.
Consequently, the People’s Party’s 24-year governance of Madrid has come to an end.
In her youth, opposition member Carmena, 71, was a member of the Communist Party.
She became an advocate for human rights during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
In 1986, she received the National Human Rights Award.
