YEREVAN. – The disaster that took place in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, also threatens Armenia, reported Zhamanak daily.

‘“Armenia is in no way insured in this sense,’ said Armhydroenergy Project Chief Hydrologist Roland Manukyan, speaking with us.

“The risk is the same as the downpour of [19]46-[19]47 [that hit Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia]. The same thing can repeat, and even worse, because thereon, with a special government order, a project was implemented [in Armenia].

‘“Some of the water coming from the Getar [River] was going toward [the] Hrazdan [River]. [But] now, it’s all destroyed, and there is only a small lake that can’t control anything. And the canal, which lead to Hrazdan, is destroyed.

‘“So, the risk continues hanging on our head,’ said the hydrologist adding that when a similar rain pours [in Yerevan], the same thing will repeat at us, and with even worse consequences.

“In his words[, however], they [i.e. the Armenian authorities] will not come to their senses until what happened in Tbilisi recurs [in Armenia],” wrote Zhamanak.

The devastating flood in Georgia’s capital city occurred in the early morning hours of June 14, as heavy rains caused the River Vere to burst its banks.
