YEREVAN. - The current authorities are doing their best to uncover

October 27 terrorist attack, Armen Sargsyan, brother of Armenian ex-PM Vazgen Sargsyan killed 16 years ago during the attack – told Armenian News – NEWS.am in the parliament today.   

“If there is a possibility to uncover [the terrorist attack], [President] Serzh Sargsyan will personally do that. There are people who think Serzh Sargsyan is guilty, but he is not to be blamed for,” Armen Sargsyan said, noting that the crime hasn’t been uncovered up to now, since the law enforcement authorities didn’t show sufficient will.

According to Armen Sargsyan, he has suspicions which he finds it difficult to live with for already 16 years. Responding to the question on who actually masterminded the crime, ex-PM’s brother said this couldn’t be the work of one person.

“I think the order came from outside and not inside,” he said.

Sixteen years have passed since the day of a terrorist attack in 1999, led by Nairi Hunanyan, in Armenia’s Parliament building.

Then Parliament Speaker Karen Demirchyan, PM Vazgen Sargsyan, Deputy Speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, Minister of Operative Affairs Leonard Petrosyan as well as MPs Armenak Armenakyan, Henrikh Abrahamyan, and Mikayel Kotanyan fell victims to the terrorists.

The judicial proceedings against the perpetrators of this tragedy were held from 2001 to 2003. As a result, six members of this group—leader Nairi Hunanyan, his brother Karen Hunanyan, their uncle Vram Galstyan as well as Derenik Bejanyan, Edik Grigoryan, and Ashot Knyazyan—were given a life sentence. Hamlet Sargsyan, on the other hand, was sentenced to fourteen years in prison.

The architects behind this terrorist attack, however, are unknown to this day.
