YEREVAN. – The draft constitutional amendments of Armenia should have recorded that the minimum wage in the country shall not be lower than the consumer basket.

“Alternative” Research Center Director, economist Tatul Manaseryan, said the abovementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

In his conviction, however, there is no need to return to a planned economy.

“A competitive market economy needs to be developed [in Armenia], but man shall be at its core,” Manaseryan noted. “This will be an economy with a social dimension. Fortunately, taking the global trends into account, our country has come to the conclusion that a social, market economy model is the best.” He also welcomed the inclusion of this point in the draft constitutional amendments.

Tatul Manaseryan added that the entirety of the economic issues on this draft is quite acceptable to him, as an economist, and in line with the challenges Armenia faces.

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6.
