YEREVAN. – The US Embassy in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, has asked the Government of the Republic of Armenia (RA) to provide them additional information on the reopening of the criminal case against the demonstrators, and with respect to the events that occurred on June 23 at Baghramyan Avenue in Downtown Yerevan, reported Haykakan Zhamanak daily.

“The US Embassy in the RA informed about this in response to our written query, and added: ‘We, for example, would like to learn about the level and extent of the examination of the cases to confirm that the charges on disproportionate use of force by the police are examined at the same depth as the cases against the demonstrators. We expect an open, transparent, and professional investigation by the police and competent agencies. 

‘“We also expect that the examination of the cases of the demonstrators be conducted with the awareness of the rights of the demonstrators, particularly with regard to the matters of freedom of assembly, publicly expressing of concerns and public safety specified by the RA Constitution,’” Haykakan Zhamanak wrote. 

During the demonstrations against the electricity price hike in Armenia, violence had occurred on June 23 in Baghramyan Avenue.
