The agreement between Armenia and the European Union (EU) will be a very important document, with a very broad agenda.

The EU European External Action Service (EEAS) Director for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, Regional Cooperation and OSCE, Gunnar Wiegand, noted the abovementioned within the framework of Wednesday’s sixteenth meeting of the EU-Armenia Cooperation Committee. 

Wiegand added that this time, however, they want to hold talks and sign an agreement, and that there is no time limit to sign this document. 

The EU official stressed that they wish to reach a good, sustainable agreement.

Gunnar Wiegand stated that he does not expect substantial changes in foreign and domestic policy, and even in economic and sectoral cooperation.

As per the EU representative, however, the approach toward trade and investment will be different because they are adjusting to the change in Armenia’s policy, which is due to its joining the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

Gunnar Wiegand, responding to the query on whether Russia would intervene in the Armenia-EU talks on a new agreement and the latter would not be signed yet again, said he does not expect such a thing because they know that Armenia is holding consultations with its partner countries in the EEU. The EU official said it is natural that partners are required to remember their commitments within various contexts, and added that we are not in an “either-or situation.”
