YEREVAN. – The around-the-clock sit-in, which is held at Liberty Square in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan by the opposition “New Armenia” Public Salvation Front which fights against the proposed constitutional amendments, is still in progress, and now, under the falling snow.
The participants in this sit-in told Armenian News-NEWS.am that about two dozen people remained in the square overnight, and that the night passed peacefully.
And vice chairman of the board of the opposition Heritage Party, Armen Martirosyan, informed that a press conference will be held on Thursday afternoon, and that there will be a rally in the evening.
To note, however, the opposition Armenian National Congress and People’s Party of Armenia also will hold a joint rally in Liberty Square, on the same day at 5pm.
The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments will be conducted on Sunday.
Pursuant to the proposed amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.
The opponents of these amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
