YEREVAN. – It is impossible to overlook the bloody events taking place in the Middle East.

Chief of the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia, Colonel General Gorik Hakobyan, noted the abovementioned at Friday’s special session devoted to the national security service officers’ day in Armenia.  

In his words, even though what currently takes place there has no direct connection with Armenia, the emigration of Syrian Armenians as well as the refugees’ continuous flow—especially toward Armenia—give reason to ponder.

“If (…) the so-called ‘Islamic state’ vice continues to rise and expand, it would also reach the North Caucasus, which would also put the interests of our country under a direct threat,” the NNS chief stated in particular.

“Since 1993, the national security agencies of Armenia have exposed and sentenced fifteen agents of Azerbaijan and Turkey. And how many agents have they exposed? Literally zero,” Hakobyan added. “Time and history will show that this battle is solely between the special services of Armenia and Azerbaijan. Any assistance rendered to Azerbaijan has not yielded to this day, and will never yield, the result that Azerbaijan seeks.

“Today, preventive measures make up the predominant amount of the [Armenian] counterintelligence work being done against the adversary.”
