YEREVAN. - The construction of a new landfill in the center of Armenia will kick off in spring 2016. Artashes Bakhshyan, Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations, told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent. The equipment necessary for the landfill operation will arrive by that time, he added.

The landfill will be located in Armenia’s Hrazdan city and will serve two provinces simultaneously - Kotayk and Gegharkunik. According to the regional strategy on solid waste management, drawn out back in 2011, it was planned to place the regional landfill for Gegharkunik province in Gagarin village, far from Lake Sevan’s  water basin. “And when we talked about the two provinces, we decided to place the landfill in Hrazdan.  Relevant research and feasibility study have been carried out for it,” Bakhshyan said.

The project is funded by 3,5 mln euro EBRD loan and same amount grant from the Neighborhood Investment Facility (NIF). Its continuation provides for additional 2 mln euro loan from EBRD and grant in the same amount from an international donor. The overall funding should constitute 11 mln euro.
