Armenia’s airspace is important to channel air traffic between Europe and Asia, Mr Frank Brenner, director general of Eurocontrol, told the media Tuesday in Yerevan on his working visit to Armenia.
Brenner, speaking in Yerevan’s Zvartnots international airport, mentioned that the area under Eurocontrol’s authority runs 31 thousand flights daily, or 10 mln flights per year. This is expected to increase to 14 mln by 2035.
“The business grows, but the airspace will naturally remain the same, so we need to put more aircraft into the same system and to make it safe”, Brenner said.
Armenia plays an important role in the crossroads between Europe and Asia, which will become an increasingly important destination. “This means that Armenia is a partner in the airspace”, he added.
Eurocontrol is an inter-governmental organization of 41 states which observes flight safety over Europe. Armenia joined the organization in 2006.
Eurocontrol’s mission has observed a high level of international compliance of Armenian civil aviation authorities. To help maintain it, the organization will provide, over the next 3 years, free consulting to Armenian partners in preparing, or checking the international compliance of, regulations in civil aviation.
