The Bundestag’s step towards recognizing the Armenian Genocide can serve as an example for many countries, Chairman of the Armenian parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations, Artak Zakaryan, told Armenian News – NEWS.am.

“The Armenian-German relations have always been at a high level in multilateral formats. By this decision made by all its political parties, the German political system enhanced the country’s full-fledged role in the formation of pan-European universal values. The states which condemn the Armenian Genocide thereby prevent similar crimes in the future. I think the German courage and political honesty will serve as another high-value example for condemning the most terrible genocidal crimes against humanity,” Zakaryan said.

Asked how Armenia will benefit from the resolution on the Armenian Genocide recognition, the MP said:  “It is not for the Republic of Armenia, but the humanity and first of all the Turks. It’s not Armenia who should benefit from that decision, but Turkey, so that it looks at the history honestly and accepts that the Ottoman Empire committed the Genocide in an organized way,” the MP noted.  

The Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, on Thursday formally recognized the Armenian Genocide.

Turkey traditionally denies the accusations over Genocide, stating that both the Armenians and Turks fell victim to the 1915 tragedy. Armenia insists on the recognition of the Genocide by the international community. As a matter of fact, the Genocide has so far been recognized by many states, including Russia, France, Switzerland, Poland, as well as European Parliament and the World Council of Churches.
