YEREVAN. – The European Union takes note of the vote in the German Parliament, and admits this is a national decision of a member state, spokesperson for European Commission said in response to an e-mail inquiry by Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“The European Commission, while recognising that there continue to be different views amongst the EU's Member States on the issue of events in 1915, seeks ways to advance and support reconciliation,” the EU representative said.

The EU encourages further, meaningful steps paving the way towards full reconciliation between Turkish and Armenian civil societies and believes that it is essential for countries to be able to face their past through open and frank debates.

The Union also remains committed to the normalisation process of relations between Turkey and Armenia and encourages both sides to continue to engage in this process without preconditions.

As to the question whether Bundestag’s vote might have an impact on EU-Turkey migration deal, the spokesperson said: “We don’t speculate, we are working with Turkey on the basis of the Statement of 18 March.”
