YEREVAN. – Berlin will make extra efforts to normalize Armenia-Turley relations, German Ambassador to Armenia Bernhard Matthias Kiesler told reporters on Friday.

“If we speak about the implications of the Bundestag resolution yesterday, one of them is what is clearly noted in the resolution: we need to do more for the reconciliation of Turkey and Armenia,” said Kiesler.

He stressed that Germany has numerous plans toward establishing closer relations between the civil societies of Armenia and Turkey.

“In the long term, we [i.e. Germany] wish to see that diplomatic relations will be established between Armenia and Turkey, and the Armenian-Turkish border will open one day,” the German diplomat added.

The Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, on Thursday formally recognized the Armenian Genocide, with the aforesaid resolution and with only one vote against and one abstention. The resolution also notes that the Bundestag regrets that the German government at the time did nothing to stop this crime against humanity, and therefore the Bundestag also acknowledges the respective historical accountability of Germany.
