The murder of MP Joe Cox who was gunned down in Birstall village, West Yorkshire, is an attack at all democratic process of Great Britain, The Telegraph reported.

The newspaper notes that the British democracy is based on the parliamentary principle. The parliament includes people from local communities — politicians who represent the interests of the population. Their work assumes that they should be visible and accessible to the voters.

The newspaper added that this makes them vulnerable. However, the British democracy is based on the willingness of deputies to meet openly the voters, for example, in libraries and the public centers, despite all threats. The democracy practicing behind thick glass of safety will be depleted.

When Queen Elizabeth II traveled in the center of London in an open carriage, it was a reminder that one of the main features of a peaceful and open society is the fact that the public officials are not afraid of their people. The newspaper expresses hope that this will remain so in spite of the tragedy.
