Former chairman of the UN General Assembly John Ashe accused by U.S. prosecutors of bribery died at the age of 62 on June 22, The Daily Mail reported.

Heart attack became a cause of the diplomat's death. According to the Antigua media, Ashe has been found dead at his home in the U. S..

In October 2015, the Federal Court in Manhattan accused Ashe and three other suspects of taking $1.3million in bribes from Chinese businessmen for assistance in construction of the UN conference center in Macau. In addition, the former chairman of General Assembly was suspected of receiving more than $ 800,000 from the Chinese businessmen to support their interests within the United Nations and Antigua.

Previously, Ashe was arrested at his home in New York.

Ashe was a former U.N. ambassador from Antigua and Barbuda who served in the largely ceremonial post of president of the 193-nation assembly from September 2013 to September 2014.
