World’s saddest white polar bear Arturo has died in zoo in Mendoza, Argentina. He was 31. Arturo was the last captive polar bear in the country, The Telegraph reported.
The polar bear was born in the U.S.. He was moved to Argentina aged eight. The predator got his nickname after death of another polar bear.
Arturo became famous in 2014 when it was reported that the Argentine zoo refused to transfer the depressed polar bear to Canada. The petition in support of Arturo collected hundreds of thousands of signatures, but veterinarians stated that the bear was too old for transportation.
As the newspaper noted, the zoo where Arturo had lived was closed in June. Between December and May 64 animals died there. Officials said outbreaks of bacteria and overcrowding were to blame. They planned to turn the zoo into a reserve and to send the animals to more suitable places
The Greenpeace expressed hope that Arturo was the last polar bear held in zoo in Argentina
