The agreement reached by the EU with Turkey on the issue of admission of migrants should not be supported at all costs, even if Europe is interested in it, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni told reporters, TASS reported.
The minister said that despite all the criticism towards that agreement, the flow of migrants along the Balkan route is suspended. Only some migrants are transported through the Aegean Sea. He also added that they would not sacrifice their principles for saving this agreement.
He pointed to the fact that EU-Turkey cooperation depends on the mutual fulfillment of obligations by the parties. Gentiloni noted that if the Turkish side retreats or Ankara starts talks on re-introduction of the death penalty it will be very difficult for the EU to continue cooperation even on such a sensitive issue, as migration.
