YEREVAN. – All police chiefs have been and remain a tool in the leadership’s hands, said Armenia’s first human rights advocate.

Larisa Alaverdyan, head of “Against Illegal Arbitrariness” NGO, believes changes in different areas of real politics are urgent.

“Every time police is thrown to resist the society, and every time police has to be responsible for the unfulfilled tasks. Police see the answer in a “baton” so what we see when plainclothes police officers are beating demonstrators. This is a very negative impact not only on the reputation of our country, but also on the perception of the public authorities in general, and the police, in particular,” Alaverdyan said.
