On August 23 in Riga, the Baltic countries and the United States issued a joint statement on cooperation in defense sector. The document was adopted at the meeting of the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, the US Vice President Joe Biden, Latvian and Estonian Presidents Thomas Ilves and Raimonds Vējonis, says the Lithuania's presidential press release. The participants of the meeting discussed the issues of strengthening the protection of the Baltic region, energy and nuclear safety issues of the countries, and how the US can to join the NATO's eastern wing,.
At the meeting, an emphasis was made on the importance of presence of the US forces in the region and desire to fulfill commitments announced by the NATO leaders at the Warsaw meeting, as well as investments in the international military forces. The statement indicates that the national efforts are directed to restrain and respond to external cyber hybrid threats, energetic security, and the protection of the borders. The issue of the effective protection of the infrastructures is one of the main priorities of cooperation between the US and the Baltic countries.
