Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has left her official residence in the capital Brasilia following her impeachment and removal from office, BBC reported.

According to media, supporters and colleagues met her with flowers near the palace. More supporters awaited Ms Rousseff as she arrived at an airport to board a plane to the southern city of Porto Alegre, her adopted hometown.

Brazilian Senate voted for Dilma Rousseff's impeachment by 61 votes to 20. As a result of separate vote senators did not deprive her of the possibility to hold a public office.

Vice President Michel Temer became the interim head of state before elections which will take place in 2018. Rousseff herself described her dismissal as a coup and promised to continue political activities.
