Despite Brexit and the crisis caused by it, the EU will not break up, the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker stated.

According to him, the British referendum is a warning that the EU faces a battle for survival against nationalism in Europe, Reuters reported.

“There are splits out there and often fragmentation exists ... That is leaving scope for galloping populism,” he said.

At the same time he emphasized that he believed the world's biggest trade bloc was still an important force.

“The EU as such is not at risk,”  he noted.
