YEREVAN. – The elections of local government in major cities of Armenia showed that competitive elections have no alternative, spokesman for the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, the Vice-Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov said on Monday.

He thanked the residents of Gyumri and Vanadzor towns who voted for the representatives of the Republican Party in both cities. Despite all the difficulties in the urban economy, citizens once again expressed confidence in the Republican Party of Armenia, he added.

He congratulated the representatives of other political forces elected to the Board of Elders of the cities. The new model of these councils, urban mini-parliaments will work even more effectively for the benefit of the residents, he said.

RPA also succeeded in the cities of Sevan, Kapan, Sisyan and Akhtala. According to Sharmazanov, success in relatively big cities is a very good foundation for success in the parliamentary elections.

“But we need to work even harder, so as not to squander the trust of our voters,” he said.

The local government elections were held in 375 communities of Armenia’s six regions. In Gyumri and Vanadzor the elections were held under new Constitution: the first person in the list of the winning forces became a mayor.
