The Government of Japan announced freezing of the funding of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) as a sign of protest to the decision to include documents on Nanjing Massacre of 1937 in the World Heritage List, TASS reported.

The decision of not financing was made on the basis of complex assessment of various factors, Japanese FM Fumio Kishida stated at a press conference in Tokyo.

Last October Tokyo made it clear that it could stop financing of UNESCO. This will be a massive blow to the organization, as 10.8% of the budget of the organization is the share of Japan.

In 2015, UNESCO has included archival materials on anjing Massacre of 1937 in “Memory of the World” by China's proposal. Japan's Foreign Ministry said at the time that the documents presented by Beijing distorted history and were based on unilateral judgments. Tokyo admitted the fact of punishments in Nanjing, but claimed that there was no confirmed data on a death toll, in this respect there could be different opinions
