In 1932, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk purchased from Iran, and with his own money, the small section between Turkey and Nakhchivan, according to SonDakika (Last Minute) news website of Turkey. 

As per this website, Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish republic, gave up his personal funds for the country and the Turks’ security in the future.

The website also noted that Armenians wished to “conquer” Nakhchivan in the 1990s, but Turkey managed to deploy troops and military equipment to Nakhchivan by way of this small land Atatürk had bought, and “save” Nakhchivan.

This strategic corridor has enabled Turkey to have a land link with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan.
