Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statement that Turkey is no more a country that would wait at the EU’s door like a docile supplicant will displease EU, as the latter is interested in Turkey’s playing a second fiddle, Ph.D. in Political Science, lecturer of Yerevan State University Narek Galstyan told NEWS.am.
According to Galstyan, such statements by official Ankara are not new, as Turkey has been developing an active policy in the region. “Turkish Premier’s statements should be viewed in two perspectives. Firstly, in terms of domestic political developments in the country on the eve of parliamentary elections, secondly, Turkey’s desire to become a leader of the Muslim world.
The political scientist stressed EU will give an adequate response to Erdogan’s aggressive statements.
“In this regard I consider that EU’s stance on Turkey’s joining the union will acquire new nuances in the near future: on the one hand, EU will no longer placate Turkey, on the other hand, the union will take a tougher line with Turkey’s EU-aspirations.
“I do not think EU will make concessions to Turkey,” he stressed. According to Galstyan, if talks on Armenia-Turkey rapprochement resume, EU’s role will be in Armenia’s favor,” he emphasized.
“It’s been more than half a century since Turkey first knocked at Europe’s door. In the past, Turkey’s EU vocation was purely economic. The Turkey of today is different. We are no more a country that would wait at the EU’s door like a docile supplicant,” Erdogan had told Newsweek.
