It is difficult to define what exactly happened in Egypt, a revolution or merely an uprising, until a certain regime is established in the country, expert in Arabic studies Davit Harutunyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am. The army, which is temporarily holding the power, will hardly change the established order, he added.

According to him, although certain reforms will be carried out, an authoritarian system will be preserved. “In any case, it is difficult to make precise forecasts as there is no ideological opposition. As soon as the question on elections is raised, separate groups, which are part of a popular movement, will introduce thier own program. Ideological clashes between nationalists, Islamists and liberals will occur, so that these forces will be unable to unite efforts. Transition will be carried out by the army, therefore the nationalists are likely to come to power,” the expert said. 

Yesterday president Hosni Mubarak resigned and handed power to the Council of Armed Forces headed by Defense Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.
