The Armenian parliamentarians intend to legally regulate the breastfeeding process.

National Assembly of Armenia held hearings discussing ways to promote breastfeeding. In particular they offered to limit television advertising of artificial milk formulas, to restrict their sale and distribution. It was also proposed to prohibit the use of artificial milk formula in hospitals. This raises several questions, for example, concerning mothers who can’t breastfeed.

The hearing was reminded that nursing mothers rely on the Labor Code benefits, such as one hour extra rest during work and free time for breastfeeding.

According to doctors and MPs, the promotion of breastfeeding is important given that there is lower mortality among infants; they are generally healthier and have higher immunity.

It is noteworthy that adoption of such measures will harm the pocket of some major Armenian businessmen, as the market of artificial baby food in Armenia is divided between two or three companies.
