The recently signed coalition memorandum helped the parties that needed a merger, Armen Martirosyan, a member of the Heritage parliamentary faction, told journalists Feb. 24. He pointed out that the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Prosperous Armenia Party and Rule of Law Party made that step “to build up their resistance.”

He is sure that the new memorandum was a result of the domestic political situation rather than of foreign political processes. However hard the coalition forces try to cooperate at various levels, they will clash. One example is the elections of the Municipal Council the RPA and Prosperous Armenia clashed. And it is not in the authorities’ interest now that Prosperous Armenia is playing “quasi-opposition” games. And the current situation made the party merge with the RPA, Martirosyan said.

The coalition memorandum has created a new situation for the Opposition, a need for coordinated actions and a plan. “The Opposition must form a common agenda. Cooperation has no alternative. However, it is not merger and formation of large alliances that is in question,” he said.

He mentioned the Heritage Party’s cooperation with the Armenian National Congress (ANC) within the fact-finding expert group on March 1, 2008 events, as well as cooperation with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D) in protesting against the Armenian-Turkish protocols. “The opposition political forces can cooperate at least in making political statements. The only thing to do is to put party interests to one side and cause people to rise,” the MP said.
