Rioting broke out on the streets of Paris today as thousands of "Yellow Vest" protesters called on French President Emmanuel Macron to resign, The Mirror reported.

Tear gas, water cannon, flesh ball guns and baton charges were used by the Paris police at Les Invalides  - marking the 10th consecutive week of protests against Macron's government.

One police officer at the scene claimed they were being attacked and that demonstrators were becoming violent.

He said: "There are hundreds of CRS riot police and gendarmes engaged, and they are being attacked.

"Thousands of demonstrators are in the area, and some are becoming very violent indeed. Everything is being done to protect Les Invalides."

Protesters assembled by the Invalides esplanade near the Assemblee Nationale parliament and marched through the city's Left Bank.

A police source said there were around 5,000 protesters in Paris, some of whom gathered near the Champs Elysees, while there were similar demonstrations in major cities across France.
