The Directorate for Advanced Research Projects of the US Defense Department (DARPA) has proposed using tactical tunnels on the battlefield, RIA Novosti reported referring to National Interest.

For a long time, such devices were a headache for the US army: during World War II at the battles for Iwo Jima, in Vietnam and even in confrontation with ISIS militants, the source noted.

According to DAPRA staff, US soldiers could use this experience to gain advantage on the battlefield. However, the military does not have the necessary skills.

The first phase of the program proposed by DAPRA involves $11 million in costs for evaluating the effectiveness of drilling methods and building tunnels in terms of technical characteristics. The authors propose to use tunnels only for the supply of food and ammunition, as well as for evacuation missions. The technology itself is recognized by the authors as expensive and not completely safe.
