A federal judge in the US state of Virginia on Thursday sentenced President Donald Trump’s former election campaign chairman Paul Manafort to 47 months in prison on charges of financial crimes.

The sentence imposed, however, was significantly less than the 19 1/2 to 24 years Manafort could have received under the advisory recommendations, The Hill reported.

Manafort’s defenders noted that the charges brought against him are not linked to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into “collusion” between the Trump campaign team and Russia.

As per The Hill, Manafort was convicted of filing false tax returns, bank fraud, and failing to report foreign bank accounts.
