Ten murders used to be recorded as a result of domestic violence on average every year, but now ten murders have already been recorded over the first six months of this year. This is what human rights activist Zara Hovhannisyan declared during a press conference today.
According to her, this goes to show that the law on domestic violence adopted in 2017 didn’t help solve the problems.
“However, this doesn’t mean that Armenia has to adopt any document without understanding the essence of the particular document. What is noteworthy is the fact that in 2013, there were certain groups that were against adoption of the law on gender equality. There are still such groups that are talking about the fact that there is no need for the Istanbul Convention when there is a law on violence,” Hovhannisyan said.
She added that the Constitution of Armenia defines the terms “tradition” and “traditional family”, but there is no legal explanation of those terms.
