YEREVAN. - The Armenian National Congress (ANC) has found itself in a situation when it cannot make a step either backward or forward, Chairman of the Heritage parliamentary group Stepan Safaryan told on a press conference on Tuesday.

The ANC leader, Armenia`s First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan has thrown down the gauntlet to the opposition forces outside the ANC. However, one fine day Ter-Petrosyan will see he is alone, Safaryan added.

"One day Levon Ter-Petrosyan will see he is surrounded by enemies ready to stone him because it was he that worked out this `stoning strategy`. He has spoiled his relations with all the forces outside the ANC. However, we should not forget it was the ANC that stated it alone would not be able to change power unless the other political forces unite. Ter-Petrosyan was the one saying that, and he will have to revert to his statements," Safaryan said.

According to him, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan "was able to skillfully resolve" former president Robert Kocharyan`s problem. Now he is trying to solve Levon Ter-Petrosyan`s problem "by drawing him into a situation he will find it hard to get out of."

The ANC`s current situation is rather dangerous.

"I say it as a political scientist, not as a Heritage party member," Safaryan said.

Armenian News-NEWS.am previously reported that the ANC and the Heritage party had a conflict during the March 17 rally. Arriving at Liberty Square in Yerevan, Levon Ter-Petrosyan did not come up to the Heritage party leader Raffi Hovhannisyan, who was on a hunger-strike.
