YEREVAN. – There are places in every city where rallies are forbidden, Yerevan Mayor Karen Karapetyan told in a press conference on Tuesday.
If Yerevan City Hall bans meetings in some places, particularly in Liberty Square, it gives explanations for its decision, he noted. Meanwhile, the mayor stressed that Yerevan Municipality has no biased attitude towards political forces. Yerevan City Hall should not be reproached that Armenian National Congress is allowed to hold a rally at Liberty Square unlike People’s Party of Armenia.
“If something is banned, it should be banned for everyone. I do not agree that it is a violation of freedom of speech,” Karapetyan added, urging not to seek political implications.
After March 1 bloody events in 2008, Yerevan City Hall bans to hold rallies at Liberty Square.
However, during the recent ANC-launched rallies, the protestors were allowed to enter Liberty Square following talks with law enforcement agents.
