YEREVAN. – Hraparak newspaper of Armenia writes: “On December 26, a meeting of the board of trustees will be convened at YSU [Yerevan State University], where YSU Student Council President Davit Apoyan, together with the students, will make a tough demand to announce a competition for the vacant position of [YSU] Rector.
“The authorities are trying first to pass a law on education, to announce a new competition that their candidate passes. The new board is made up of 12 members; the minister appoints 6, YSU - 4, 2 – from the business world.
The authorities have no confidence in today's board; and at the request of [minister] Arayik Harutyunyan and Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, the competition is endlessly postponed, which the student council was trying to prevent. The [YSU] acting rector had summoned Davit to persuade him not to do such thing; zero result. Therefore, by a theatrical event yesterday, Apoyan was detained by way of the police, dragging him through university corridors to scare the students, and that tomorrow's session be held according to the authorities' scenario,” a YSU official said.
