YEREVAN. - The confrontation between oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC) and “Heritage” party plays into the hands of authorities that will only benefit from the current situation, political analyst Alexander Markarov told reporters on Wednesday.

Markarov stressed the ANC has more chances to win the elections than “Heritage” party.

“Heritage will try to hold seats in the Armenian parliament. As regards the ANC, the congress has no such problems,” he noted.

Commenting on the question whether the talks between ANC and authorities will make Ter-Petrosyan’s supporters to turn away from him, Markarov said it is possible.

“The talks between ANC and the authorities are a result of abrupt change in ANC’s strategy. ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan is well aware that any domestic tension is fraught with undesirable consequences in country’s foreign policy. It is not ruled out that some from the ANC electorate will turn away from Ter-Petrosyan or sink into apathy, or try to find another oppositional force, which will express their stance,” he emphasized.
